I returned today after a 7 day work project . The boat house has two coats of paint, lawns trimmed, chimney cleaned, and Cemetery cleaned up. Great work crew! Hope to help more in future.

wish you guys would have not treated this island like your personal home. It needs SOME help to keep this historical place from falling apart, but you are taking it too far. I miss the old days when this place was a place to go and really feel the history of these old buildings, but this feeling is gone now and it looks like my grandma lives there now. Don't get me wrong i am happy that someone has taken this over, but it looks like it was taking way to far and took the history out of it for good.
Comment:
Hello Jim,

Thank you for visiting the website and signing the guest book. I am writing in response to your comment about 'going too far'. We tried to reach you by e-mail, but our messages got bounced, so I have to post my reply here.

My name is Catherine Allchin and I am VP of the Fox Island Lighthouse Association. I am glad that you are interested in the station, however I am confused by your comment "it only needs SOME help...'
Where would you have liked us to stop? Only dig out half of the boathouse from the years of rocks that half buried it? Maybe only clear one path through the overgrowth?

At one point in time the grounds were manicured, the buildings meticulously maintained and there was a crispness to the station. In its lifetime, over 64 families served there either as keepers or USCG. There is an honor to save these buildings and grounds from eventual decay.

Not so very long ago the station was abandoned, vandalism took it's toll and many items were taken. Now it is no longer hidden in the brush, the buildings can be seen and are clear from debilitating overgrowth. Yes it LOOKS like someone is 'home' and now visitors wander the grounds with more care and respect.

The station IS a hidden treasure but it is an important part of our maritime history and we are committed to sharing it with more than a small private group. We work closely with the DNRE in all that we do and they are supportive.

We are committed to saving all of the station not 'just 'some'.

I would be interested to hear of your connection to the station and how often you go out there.

We appreciate your comments and hope that you continue to let us know your thoughts.

Regards,
Catherine Allchin
VP FILA

I am taking my family from Old Mission to S Fox for an overnight at the end of the month. Are there any restrictions, or navigational aid I should be aware of?

I just completed a week volunteering at Grand Traverse Lighthouse and read your website with interest. Question: is the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewas involved with the restoration? It would be beautiful if that were the case, despite the earlier judicial/political difficulties. Are we reaching out to them, and vice versa?

Just returned from my first visit to South Fox Island. It was a trip I will never forget due to the beauty and serenity of the place. We worked hard, had a great meal prepared over the fire.

To Cathy Allchin,
I am glad to see that you are involved in some great community projects. The Great Lakes and the history around them have always been fond memories to me.
Good job Cathy
